For sale here is a great looking and hard to find Civil War Era Cavalry Officer's Sword Hanger. As you can see from the pictures, this one is made of leather and is faced in gold bullion with a central yellow stripe for Cavalry. The hanger is maker marked Horstmann Phila on the back of the upper belt clip.
It is marked Pat Apl'd For on the front. The upper hanger is made of brass and has a hanging hook on the front and an interesting quick release clip on the back. The rest of the hangers are backed in black leather and faced with gold bullion. The lower buckles are brass and the brass clips at the end of the hangers are functional, but slightly out of kilter. All of the brass shows heavy mellow patina that is roughly the same throughout. The black leather is slightly stiffened with some surface finish loss and some small cracks. The gold bullion shows good toning and there are some wrinkles where the leather behind it has shrunken some over the years. The yellow stripe down the center is vibrant, but there are some dark spots on the wrinkles.
Laid flat, the entire hanger has a length of approximately 16 for scale. I couldn't find another piece just like this for reference anywhere, but to my knowledge, this style font was used by Horstmann during the Civil War. However, the overall style reminds me more of Indian War pieces.
This is an interesting, innovative(Quick Belt Release), and beautiful hanger. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have. Please take a look at my other great items!
