Jefferson Davis was best known as the only President of the Confederate States of America, from 1861 to 1865. A graduate of West Point, Davis served in the U. House of Representatives for a single term before joining the U. Army in the Mexican-American War. He was appointed by the governor of Mississippi to the U. From 1853 to 1857, he served as the Secretary of War under President Pierce before returning to the Senate. He resigned in 1861 and was elected provisional Confederate president by acclimation. After the Civil War, he was imprisoned and released on bail after two years.

President Andrew Johnson issued a presidential pardon and amnesty on Christmas Day, 1868. After the Civil War, Davis became a symbol of the Lost Cause. Much of Jefferson Davis life and career has been obscured in controversy and misinterpretation. This rich, carefully annotated edition will make it possible for scholars to reassess the man who served as President of the Confederacy and who in the aftermath of the Civil War became the symbolic leader of the South.

The interiors are clean with no writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards, or other markings.

The pages are clean, bright white and in excellent condition. The dust jackets are clean and in excellent condition, but do have a couple, small marks.
