MARCHING TO VICTORY THE SECOND PERIOD OF THE WAR OF THE REBELLION INCLUDING THE YEAR 1863 BY CHARLES CHARLETON COFFIN FIRST EDITION FINE - CONDITION Original, Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly Bound, Antique Book Handsomely Decorated Cover Design with Bright Gold Flag Image Wonderfully Illustrated Throughout; Fully Indexed HANDSOMELY PUBLISHED BY HARPER & BROTHERS, NEW YORK, IN 1888 Marching to Victory is a handsome and engrossing history of the Civil War covering the middle period of the struggle. It focuses on the events of the year 1863. The year began auspiciously for the Union in the triumph of the Army of the Cumberland on the field of Stone Rive and progressed chronologically with the disastrous defeat of the Union Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville and at the same time the repulse of the Confederates at Suffolk, Virginia. While events were transpiring east of the Alleghenies, the Union Army of the Tennessee began a strategic movement with resulted in the victories of Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion hills, Big Black Rive and the siege of Vicksburg.

The achievements of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, the Army of the Tennessee at Vicksburg and the army at Port Hudson on the Mississippi and the severance of the States of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas from the other States of the Confederacy, rendering co-operation between the sections impossible, marked the culmination of Confederate power. During the summer and early autumn the Confederates in Middle Tennessee were forced to abandon the State, while Eastern Tennessee which had been loyal to the Union, was brought once more under U. This was followed by the battle of Chickamauga, won by the confederates. The year ended with Union victories at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and at Knoxville and by the reducing of Fort Sumter.
