Jefferson Davis (18081889) was an American military officer and politician who, after serving as a US Congressman, Senator, and Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the American Civil War. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR-DATED LETTER SIGNED BY JEFFERSON DAVIS AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA TO THE CONFEDERATE STATES CONGRESS.

Historically important Civil War-dated letter signed by, Jefferson Davis, as President of the Confederate States of America to the Confederate House of Representatives: I herewith transmit for your information a communication from the Secretary of the Navy, in response to your Resolution of the 16th inst, asking the amount required to meet claims upon the government for vessels and other property seized by the Naval and military authorities for the use of the government. I recommend an appropriation of the amount, and for the purpose specified. The letter is one page on lightly lined bifolium paper with docketing on the verso, measures 9.75 by 7.75 inches, created in Richmond, VA on September 22, 1862, and in fine condition with a tear to the top right corner and a small grommet to the top left corner. PRESIDENT DAVIS FAVORABLY RESPONDS TO THE CONGRESS RESOLUTION TENDING THANKS TO COMMANDER EBENEZER FARRAND AND CAPTAIN AUGUSTUS DREWRY FOR THEIR VICTORY AT THE BATTLE OF DREWRYS BLUFF AND PROVIDES ESTIMATES TO COMPENSATE THOSE WHOSE VESSELS AND OTHER PROPERTY WERE SEIZED BY THE MILITARY FOR THE WAR EFFORT. On September 16, 1862, a day before the Battle of Antietam, the CSA Congress passed a resolution tendering thanks to Commander Ebenezer Farrand and Captain Augustus Drewry for their victory at the famous naval battle of Drewrys Bluff five months earlier, with the motion likewise entitling reparations to all who contributed thereto.
