If you need the finest, this one's for you. Amazing, near-mint, Ames Manufacturing Mounted Officer's sword, Civil War model 1850. This sword retains better than 95% original luster with "frosting", featuring the Ames Manufacturing hallmark on ricasso.
The sharkskin grip is in mint condition with no deterioration, no noticeable shrinkage, and tight original brass wire wrap. The grip and guard are tight with the blade, there is no looseness or movement, and the sword is a perfect snug fit with the scabbard. The scabbard is the early Ames style, blued (Ames later used the brown shellac on metal scabbards), dating this sword 1861 or earlier. All parts are mint or near mint. There are generous amounts of gold wash remaining on the guard and scabbard mounts.
Importantly, notice the wear to the drag, this sword was clearly used in the Civil War, on the campaign trail, and was clearly well-cared for, remaining in near-mint condition. This is the Foot Officer's sword style, though presented with a metal scabbard is commonly referred to as the Mounted Officer's Sword.
This is an amazing, investment grade, high-quality Civil War model 1850 mounted officer's sword made by Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee Massachusetts, nearly impossible to get a sword that shows signs of usage and yet remains in such pristine condition.
