The Special Artists brought a pad and paper to sketch scenes from the front lines that could be turned into engravings for publication in newspapers. At 22 years old, Edwin Forbes, was assigned as a Special Artist to cover the war. While other artists focused on the more exciting scenes such as battles and generals, Edwin Forbes focused on the day-to-day life of the soldiers. In 1876, Edwin Forbes created his famous series of 40 etchings, Life Studies of the Great Army, which won him a gold medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition the same year.
