Soon after the advent of the musket, bayonets developed to assist hunters and armies. Originally, the bayonet was created so hunters could face wounded animals. In 1840 the French produced a recurved Yataghan bayonet, whose style was to affect bayonet design across the world for the next 50 years. The 1840 model had a distinctive recurved blade, based on the North African Yataghan swords.
In military situations, the bayonet was needed because rifles at the time were inaccurate and required a lot of time to reload. The bayonet offered another fighting option for the soldier.
Eventually, the bayonet became a wartime standard for armies and navies across the world. The absence of any British War Department ownership stamp, bend test, manufacture date, and any Royal ciphers suggests that this bayonet was made for private sale or export, probably to America for use in the American Civil War. Typical for Confederate imports early in the War. Armies during the Civil War used a variety of weapons.Soldiers attached bayonets to the ends of rifles to add a stabbing power that could be applied during charges when in the days of musket... Loading a rifle quickly was impossible. Both Union and Confederate armies used this type of a model 1856 Enfield saber bayonet. It has a sharply beaked pommel with a press-stud and external spring locking mechanism. It has 2 pieces of straight checkered leather-covered grips, with a steel crosspiece with cockscomb sight above the muzzle ring and flat button finials on the end of the opposite guard. The interior of the muzzle ring is flush with the tang of the blade, indicating that this is a true 1856 model bayonet, as opposed to the later, re-worked 1858 model.
The 57.2 cm / 22.5 recurved blade has saw-teeth added to the on the spine with a broad single fuller on both sides. The recurved (Yataghan) blade has a 200mm upper false edge. #This has no makers and or inspection marks but it has the number 421 stamped into the end of the pommel. If this is not for you I also have other unusual Bayonets and Militaria Finds in my shop. Please go to my store to see the full range. This bayonet is Antique, used, and in good condition for its age and use in warfare. The leather grips checkered finish is quite worn but shows some wear with marks but the leather is intact with no missing piece and overall in good condition and fits tightly to the tang, the Lock button and leaf spring function is in working order. The blade has a bright finish with an aged grey patina and scattered stain and some pitting patches at the top (handle end).
The true edge is not sharp. But the saw-teeth are still sharp with little wear to the points.
The remaining metal on the cross-guards and pommel has a bright finish with some wear and scattered grey stain spots and slight pitting.
