US MODEL M1873/M1855 SOCKET BAYONET WITH SCABBARD. A collectible Indian Wars era Model 1873 socket bayonet that was repurposed from an M1855 bayonet. These bayonets were manufactured for use on the. 45-70 caliber Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle.

The M1873 was the first bayonet ever to be blued and was the last socket bayonet to be issued in the US arsenal. It looks nearly identical to the M1855 bayonet that was made for.

58 caliber muskets and used extensively in the Civil War. This particular bayonet was originally an M1855 bayonet, but the socket was later "cold shrunk" to fit the smaller. Specifically, this M1873 was made from a M1855 Type 2 bayonet, based on the positioning of the slot stop pin. When the screw/clamp of the locking ring is placed in a vertical position on the same plane as the blade shank, there is a gap between the mortise slot and the stop pin of about 2/10 (see photo). Overall length of this bayonet is approximately 21. The blade length is about 17 7/8. The socket length is approximately 2 15/16.

Width of the blade (at shoulders) is approximately 13/16. The internal socket diameter on the front side is just under 3/4. The rear side socket diameter is slightly wider and just over 3/4.

A penny will not fit in the front side of the socket but fits in the rear side. The flat portion of the blade near the shoulder is marked "US" with a dot above it. I've read that the dot is hardness test punch mark.

The bayonet comes with an original 1873 folded steel scabbard with a US (no dots version) brass button. The leather portion is attached to the steel throat with 2 tabs and an off-center rivet. I've read that the riveted tab attachment was phased out in the early 1880s.

It is guaranteed to be authentic M1873 bayonet and NOT a reproduction. Condition of this M1873 bayonet and scabbard is GOOD.

Most of the bluing on the blade is intact but there is some rust and pitting on the elbow and socket. The belt loop is torn off the leather frog of the scabbard.

There is also some rust, pitting, and a small dent on the steel portion of the scabbard. Overall, this collectible bayonet looks good and displays well. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. M1873 Bayonet From Repurposed M1855 Bayonet.

Opposite Side of Socket Showing 2/10 Space Between Slot And Stop Pin (M1855 Type 2). Screw Clamp Assembly Goes Beyond Vertical Position (M1855 Type 2). Marked US on Ricasso With Hardness Test Punch Mark. US Button (No Dots Version).
