This is a true antique U. Civil War sword best with a brass eagle and shield buckle.
The leather on the sword belt has become stiffened and cracked from age, but enough remains to identify how the piece was worn and sued. The buckle is decorated with an American eagle carrying a shield and holding arrows and an olive branch. There is a scroll above printed with the words E Pluribus Unum. There is a Laurel wreath below the eagle.
The buckle measures 3 3/8" X 2 1/16". The only identifying mark on the back side of the buckle is the number 96. The leather sword belt is obviously original, and is bit rough as you can see in the photographs. This is a pretty neat Civil War artifact that deserves to be cared for and properly displayed.
