She was built in 1854, using a small amount of material salvaged from the frigate USS Constellation, which had been disassembled the year before. Despite being a single-gundeck "sloop, " she is actually larger than her namesake frigate, and more powerfully armed with fewer but much more potent shell-firing guns.
The sloop was launched on 26 August 1854 and commissioned on 28 July 1855 with Captain Charles H. She remained in service for close to a century before finally being retired in 1954. In response to my inquiry, the Curator of Historic Vessels & Collections, stated. Leon Polland was a very active member of the USS CONSTELLATION Committee particularly in the 1960s.The present USS CONSTELLATION is in fact a sloop-of-war built in 1853-55 and back in the 1960s there was considerable controversy over its identity (the frigate built in Baltimore and commissioned in 1797 and broken up in 1853, or the second US Navy warship to bear the name CONSTELLATION which was the sloop-of-war built in Norfolk, VA and commissioned in 1855). Polland was extremely active with creating drawings to show how the sloop-of-war should be "restored" to resemble the frigate, and the drawings you have are no doubt examples of these. On the whole, I would say that these are significant only in the context of the frigate vs. Thank you for reaching out and I believe you will find the report above to be very informative and interesting.
Cora (Curator of Historic Vessels and Collections, Historic Ships in Baltimore). Now you can see for yourself!IMPORTANT INFORMATION & ITEM SPECIFICS BELOW. Please Note: This was EXTRAORDINARILY DIFFICULT TO PHOTOGRAPH. Some part of the Blueprint may be left out. There is clear DISCOLORATION and Gradation of SHADING in parts of these prints. The items in this series are all schematics of this Controversial Sloop-of-War. They were, strangely, found in a basement in Buffalo, NY, along with several rare oversized maps of Africa and the Middle-East. Sometimes copies of these types of items were given to financiers of restoration projects, as a token of appreciation, in the early 1900s. However, I was unable to verify whether any blueprints similar to these were produced for that purpose.
