A very rare variation of the Navy Civil War Campaign Medal, as produced by the US Mint in the late 1930s. Originally the USN CW medal was made by Bailey, Banks and Biddle, starting in 1908. BB&B produced approximately 3000 numbered medals prior to WWI. In the late 1930s, after the Navy had stopped rim numbering campaign medals, the US Mint made a small batch of Civil War medals to re-supply the Navy. The exact quantity is unknown but it was probably less than 100.

These were official strikes, produced under US government contract. The obverse design is the same as the BB&B medals but the reverse is slightly modified, with a larger eagle and straight legend For Service. This same reverse was also used on the 1930a era Mint strikes of the USN Mexican Service and Philippine Campaign medals.

All of the USN Civil War Medals produced by the US Mint were unnumbered. It has separated in several spots, as shown in the photos, and is fitted with the original late 1930s US Mint type full wrap brooch, as typical on other campaign medals of that era. Its important to note that there are many unofficial strikes of this medal, probably made in the 1930s by J.

There are subtle but important differences between the Studley and US Mint medals. Which are shown in the photos. The Mint medals have an applied bronze tone finish while the Studley (unofficial) medals are just plain bronze metal. On the Mint medal the small ring fitted to the top of the planchet has a seam towards the reverse of the medal.

The unofficial medals all have the seam at the bottom, where the solder connects it to the planchet. This is an extremely difficult item to assign a value, as they so rarely come on the market. Ive only seen three or four other examples of the 1930s US Mint version of the Navy Civil War Medal over the past 30 years. One is in my personal collection and another is in a prominent collection on the east coast.

For collectors of US campaign medal variations or medals made by the US Mint, this is an official type that is nearly impossible to find.
