Dad, who was a World War II vet, was an early Civil War reenactor and member of the Union First PA Reserves Company K in Gettysburg, PA and a founder of the First PA Rifles Bucktails in September 1960. I started reenacting with Co K as a color bearer in 1958.

Im still reenacting with the 149 th PA Bucktails but at 70 its time to slow down. There were no reproduction weapons or leather good available like today so we used originals. I still have the two band 1861 Springfield dad cut down for me In the mid 1960s as at the time the full length was a little too much to carry. Dad continued growing his collection of US military weapons in the mid 1960s with the earliest being a Model 1795 Springfield flintlock musket. As I was the oldest of 4 children when he decided to pass his collection on in the 1980s, I had first pick and chose the Sharps carbine and this sling.

As none of my children have an interest in anything older than a Nintendo or Atari video game, time to pass these items on. The sling is in very good original condition as pictured. Over time it acquired some light oxidation on the surface of the black leather exterior while on display in his basement.

I put it in a large US metal ammo box with other Civil War/Indian War items including the saddle barrel socket over thirty years ago. While cleaning up the attic recently, I found the box and was pleasantly surprised as I hadnt remembered having many of the items including the sling.

Im sure the sling will clean up but as a rule I dont try to restore period items choosing to let the new owner make the decision. I would have no hesitation using this sling today for living history or reenactment events. This black leather Civil War era sling with the two prong bass buckle is not marked with a maker or inspection mark I can find. I believe the two prong buckle differentiates this sling from the Model 1885 with just one prong. The metal saddle ring attachment clasp is marked on the inside O.
