A superb wartime matched pair of unworn Infantry Lt. S shoulder straps attributed to a soldier from Vermont who served as an officer in a temporary position and never wore them! Woodward from Westford Vermont enlisted on 5/7/1861 at Detroit, MI as a Sergeant into "G" Co. After the war he was a member of GAR Post # 55 (Stanton) in Los Angeles, CA where he served as a policeman.Though he served most of the war as an NCO he was given temporary promotion to Lt. Included are State of Vermont Officer promotions, a letter dated Feb. 2, 1864 giving details of his temporary promotion. Two post war CdV style photos also accompany the group.
