Boldly addressed by Joshua in black ink to his son, Harold Wyllys H. Chamberlain, at 226 Maine Street in Brunswick, which was their longtime home and now the present day Chamberlain museum.
The bottom left of the panel reads: (or Lillian) if W. Is away, referring to Lillian Edmunds, Joshua's personal secretary. The handwriting is unquestionably Joshua Chamberlain's and consistent with this time period. I have attached an image of a similar envelope mailed from Egypt during one of Joshua's overseas vacations. The envelope is in excellent condition with general age toning and edgewear.A light wrinkle at the top, near the postmark, passes between the "er" portion of Chamberlain. Chamberlain (1828-1914), Signed, Autograph Envelope, Civil War General" is in sale since Saturday, October 26, 2019.
