CIVIL WAR AMES NAVAL CUTLASS M 1860 DATED 1862 W VERY RARE ORIGINAL SCABBARD. MOST OF THE LEATHER ON THE GRIP IS GONE AND THE SCABBARD IS MISSING THE LEATHER TIP WITH ONE OF THE BUTTONS. This is a good looking original Civil War naval cutlass. It is the classic model 1860 that you associate with the Union navy of the Civil War. The blade is full-length at 26 inches in overall length.At the base of the blade you can see traces of the maker's mark that is the classic scroll style makers mark from the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the only company that made these model 1860 naval cutlasses for the US government. On the base of the front of the blade it has the "1862" production date still clearly visible. There wasnt another American-made navy cutlass model until the U. It has the basket style guard still present with a nice golden tone.
