This came from an Ohio collection probably a civil war trophy with original belt, loose around rivit that holds the belt buckle on but intact this one is guaranteed 1864. This came from an Old civil war and colonial period items collection. I was advise by a seasoned expert who claimed 60 years of expertise that this buckle noted in couch's reference. Of civil war repo buckles fig, 47 page 53 has a 3 hook configuration, well the one I have listed has no hooks so then it must be real. I re-examined the belt that is original with buckle to see if I thought it has been added later and concluded it would be near impossible because of the thickness of the old steel rivet that holds the leather to the buckle.

I noted that there is metal {rust oxide} impregnated into the surface of the buckle a sign used in artifacts. My best guess is that this piece is a prototype of the civil war period to improve on the style. Of the CSA buckle , the belt bar was a work in progress that not many were made near the end of the war. I have seen many civil war.
