This bayonet was manufactured from 1853 to 1870, designed for use with the Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket and Snider Enfield Long Rifle Musket. British in design with a blade shoulder and are shallow fullered, attached by fitting over the barrel muzzle, and fastened into position a mortise slot and locking ring, being the first universal issue blade used by the British Army to employ a locking device.
Manufactured by "The Royal Small Arms Factory" (RSAF) was a United Kingdom government-owned rifle factory in the London Borough of Enfield in an area known as the Lea Valley. The arsenal produced British military rifles, muskets, and swords from 1816.
These P1853's were actually the very first Martini-Henry bayonets! Prior to the development and production of a new Pattern P1876 socket bayonet for the Martini-Henry rifle. In 1871 the RSAF Enfield undertook to modify the P1853 Enfield/Snider socket bayonets to fit the new rifle. The socket of the P1853 was bushed to fit the reduced barrel size to be adapted for use with the Martini-Henry Musket Rifle and the blade stamped with E (Enfield) and the date of conversion. It was a quick and easy fix to properly arm troops as the rifles came off the production lines.
This bayonet was used by the British Army in all of its major campaigns included Crimea, Indian Mutiny and the Zulu war until being made obsolete in around 1875. This is a fine specimen of this iconic British Colonial blade. This example has no British government markings, indicating that it exported. During the American Civil War, Canada did not yet exist as a federated nation was part of Britain up until 1867 it was officially neutral, however, Canadians fought on both sides and it is estimated that between 33,000 and 55,000 men from British North America enlisted in the war, almost all of them fighting for Union forces. The pressures of the 1861-65 Civil War, and the threat of an American invasion, helped urge Canada towards its own confederation and independence.
