This listing is for an original lady's Silk Shawl from the Civil War period. I want to call it a Canton shawl, but though it feels Oriental, I can't be sure. It's a fabulous color! The ground is red/black shot silk and the pattern is woven in bright cherry silk. The shawl is trimmed with knotted fringe on the shorter edges. The fringe is knotted to the shawl, not sewn on as trim.
On the reverse is plain black silk. It looks like a stunning square shawl was cut in half and lined.
I like to think 2 sisters shared an expensive shawl by halving it. Found in Historic Fredericksburg, Virginia just a stone's throw from Historic Kenmore Mansion- home of George Washington's sister Betty Washington Lewis.
It's perfect for display, inspiration and study. It is NOT recommended to wear.
It should be kept out of the sun, don't throw it on the back of your couch. Shown with clothing and a pin which are not included.Condition: One of the motifs is slightly worn with age, possible scattered pinholes and/or light discoloration and a little wear on the edges. Please note: Measurements are approximate and should be taken as maximum. Antique clothing items are not wearable UNLESS specifically labeled so in the description.
