This listing is for an unusually stylish original Lady's Ensemble from the Post Civil War to Early Bustle period. It consists of a sheer bodice and overskirt. The fabric is a pretty machine-made lace of floral sprays on tulle.

It's extravagantly trimmed with machine-made Chantilly lace, floss, and braid trims. Bows of silk grosgrain accent the sleeves and sides of the overskirt.

The bodice is more properly a "waist". That is the period term. In this case, it is not lined or boned, but is intended to be worn over a silk underdress.

Here, I have shown it over a corset cover and petticoat to allow the lace to be seen clearly. Originally, It could have been worn over almost any color silk. Interestingly, after her husbands death, Mary Todd Lincoln attempted to sell among other things, an expensive "lace dress" consisting of a bertha, skirt and flounce.

This is obviously not that one, but it illustrates how fashionable they were. The sleeves are gracefully cut in a curve with elaborate trim imitating cuffs.

The overskirt is lightly gathered into the waistband. It is decorated in panels for visual interest. At this time, the short overskirt was a novelty and was emphasized within the dress.

Both the "waist" and the overskirt fasten in front with hooks/eyes. T his ensemble is great for display, inspiration and study. It is absolutely NOT wearable.

Corset cover, petticoat and pin not included. Condition: Missing a hook at the waist closure.

The floss trim is shedding a little. The bodice is tacked lightly to the waistband. Possibly some minor holes here or there, but they are not very noticeable. The chest is about 36. The waist is about 24.

The length is about 16 inches. Please note: Measurements are approximate and should be taken as maximum. Antique clothing items are not wearable UNLESS specifically labeled so in the description.
