This remarkable American handmade wooden violin case is crafted from two single CHUNKS of native wood: American butternut for the top and basswood (or similar) for the bottom. Each half is carefully gouge-carved from the block to accommodate a 4/4 violin and the top boasts a bold tapered/chamfered profile with medial ridge. The bottom has a worn, grain-painted finish while the top has original dry varnish: the halves are joined by fancy hinges and closed with brass hook latches. You will note a shrinkage crack in the heavy end of the bottom and it retains its original wrought brass carrying handle. It is truly a remarkable example of mid-19th century folk craftsmanship and especially rare for an instrument case. The item "Antique Pennsylvania Folk Art Grain Painted Coffin Violin Case Pre Civil War Box" is in sale since Monday, April 29, 2019.
