This listing is for an original lady's dressing gown from the Civil War period. It's made of white cotton trimmed with hand embroidery. It closes with tiny engraved pearl buttons. The short embroidered ties cinch it in at the front and it has an interior double casing with twill strings.
Ingeniously, One long string runs through BOTH casings. The wearer would just pullit on one side and tie it off to cinch the gown to size. The ties would just then hang on the inside. This gorgeous dressing gown has no armhole piping, just a facing, BUT it's all original- no alteration. It probably was not meant to go over a hoop as I have shown, but would have buttoned all the way down. It may have been intended for a trousseau- It's entirely hand-sewn as well as hand-embroidered.
It's great for display, inspiration and study. Condition: Some possible light discoloration and/or small holes scattered throughout.
The chest is about 40. The waist is about 50.
The front length is about 36 inches. Please note: Measurements are approximate and should be taken as maximum.
