This listing is for an original Lady's dress from the Civil War period. More properly an ensemble, it's made of a semi-sheer wool and silk blend with a satin stripe, which I think very elegant.
I think it's called barege. The ensemble consists of a blouse with a gathered waist and a skirt. The blouse gathers all around the waist with a brown cotton casing and twill strings. It is unlined except for the sleeves. The skirt is unlined, but has a deep hem facing.Definitely what the fashionable lady of the 1860s would wear in the heat of summer! It's also a little short, perfect for walking! This is the mid 19th century version of sportswear! The skirt fastens at left front and is set on the waistband with knife and cartridge pleats. It's great for display, inspiration and study. Belt and pin not included. Condition: Some light discoloration and some scattered holes/wear.
There is a thin patch (pictured) on center back. On the right front armhole, the fabric is pulled as well as under the arms. There are a couple of torn buttonholes and some missing buttons. This is actually a pretty clean and strong dress!
The chest is about 38. The waist is about 24. The front length is about 38 inches. Please note: Measurements are approximate and should be taken as maximum.
