AMERICAN MEXICAN WAR CIVIL WAR AMES PRESENTATION GRADE HIGH OFFICER EAGLE HEAD SWORD SWORD C 1840. This sword has one of the most beautifully designed cross guard and pommel cap combinations you will ever encounter. If you notice the pommel cap is made of a single piece of cast brass in the shape of a union Eagle. The Eagle has the shield on her chest and in her mouth, she holds the chain that runs down to the brass cross guard of the sword.

The cross guard has the spread wing union Eagle coming through a wreath on each side. The large eagle on each side has the beautiful raised design with the extra chase work detail.

The handle of the sword is constructed of a single piece of bone that has the detail work carving on each side. The blade of the sword is full-length at 31 3/4 inches. You can still see the ornate engraving on each side of the blade. The etching contains both floral and geometric designs with the original frosting from the factory.

At the base of the blade it has the pin needle engraving from the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. It has the matching maker marking on the brass scabbard. The sword is accompanied by the original brass scabbard. The scabbard is the style that has the floral type stud at the top for attachment through a shoulder sling and it also has the rings to be mounted on the soldier side by a standard sword belt. The scabbard is ornately detailed.

On the front side with floral and geometric designs. This is a beautifully design sword from the 1850s that has a ton of character.
