#21-063, 1860's Black Silk 2 pc. Dress (perhaps for Mourning) Civil War Era. This dress was de-accessed from a small museum and has one of their labels with a number that probably related to a history card file that unfortunately, was not given with the garment. The bodice which has a bust of 31", a waist of 22", shoulders of 13" across and sleeves that are 20" long is in good original condition. There are some minor holes, but nothing major. It is missing one of its velvet buttons. The inside lining is in good condition. This could have been a mourning dress but with the velvet ribbon decoration on the bodice and at the hem of the dress we would know that this was the second stage of mourning. Most women of this time had a good black silk dress that was not only worn for church and special events but was worn for all funerals as well. Although we can say it was appropriate for Mourning, we cannot know for sure unless it has documentation. The skirt was altered in the 1890's to bring all of the pleating to the back of the garment. This was often done to update the garment and make it wearable for a different decade. The black silk waist band as you can see from the photographs is falling apart. I had to pin it on the dress form to keep it in place. The top of the skirt is splitting as well.

I have pinned it together to display it. The lining of the skirt is a dark black cotton. The skirt is very fragile at the top and will have to be handled with care. Here is your chance to own a piece of Victorian fashion history.

I have washed my hands thoroughly before packing this dress and wiped down the box with disinfectant. If you win more than two of our items within a three day period, please wait for invoice.
