T his sale is for an original 1905 FIRST EDITION of " BANJO TALKS " by Anne Virginia Culbertson with photographs by Mary Morgan Keipp and Heustis Pratt Cook. YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!! "Banjo Talks" is a collection of dialect poetry and photographs. It includes 47 poems or folk songs sung by black Southerners before and after the Civil War, and 23 black-and-white photographs featuring black adults and children in scenes of everyday life. These verses are not the sad recollections of life and hardship in the South that one might expect, but rather a joyous collection featuring themes like: pride in hard work, the joy of Christmas, a deep Christian faith, and love. They celebrate the prospect of freedom and joy at the coming emancipation.

These lines show a reverence for the land, showing a profound appreciation for life and nature, a longing for home and hearth. Dialect writing is a useful tool in understanding other regions and cultures, like the Southern black community. Here it is captured beautifully in song shining a light on the hopes, dreams, and personal experiences of real people. Anne Virginia Culbertson (1864 - 1918).

Anne Virginia Culbertson spent years traveling across post-Civil War Virginia and North Carolina collecting and publishing black folk tales and verses, interviewing black southerners and retelling their stories and songs, many of which could be traced to the traditions of Southern slaves.
