After apprenticing for the "Native American Citizen, " a local Brooklyn newspaper, he took a position with David Felt and Company who manufactured stationery, blank business forms, and playing cards. After two years of service, Dougherty left David Felt in 1841, and joined Allaire Works in New York City where much of what he learned would later be put to use in the building of machinery for his own company. In 1848, Dougherty rented a loft at 48 Ann Street in Brooklyn and began making playing cards by hand, using a stencil brush to apply the figures and suits. In 1859, he moved his business to 26-28 Beekman Street where he expanded the manufacturing of his playing cards to 5 floors of the building.

He invented his own machines to produce the cards. Steam engines powered the printing presses, and steam boilers dried the ink on the cards. In 1865 during the Civil War he released an Army Navy deck with a back that depicted the Unions Stars and Stripes.

It was considered a rebuttal to some of his English contemporaries of the day had manufactured cards depicting the Confederate flag. Incredibly In the same year, he manufactured the Illuminated deck, which many believe it to be one of the companies most beautiful decks. The Illuminated deck took inspiration from designs by De La Rue.

The cards were printed with a gold ink that seamed to illuminate the cards. The ace of spades was elaborately carved with the label of excelsior an eagle perched at the top of the card. In 1864, louis pasteur invented what came to be known as the pasteurization process that he first applied to the treatment of wine, not milk.

In that same year dougherty produced his excelsior cards. His beautiful illuminated deck was issued in 1865, the same year that saw the laying of the transatlantic cable, the assassination of president abraham lincoln , the passage of the 13th amendment abolishing slavery and the publication of alice in wonderland by lewis carroll.
