1651 English Civil War Charles I Certamen Religiosum Royalist Bayly Cartwright. An important work on the English Civil War and the struggles between Protestants and Catholics under Charles I England. In 1649, Thomas Bayly, a Royalist of the Church of England, defended Charles I against allegations that he had converted to Catholicism. Baylys defense was recorded in his book Certamen Religiosum in which he reported the discussions between the late king and Henry Somerset. This book became highly controversial, so much so that it drew the attention of Protestants and Calvinists who had been loyal to Charles during his Protestant years. Christopher Cartwright responded to Baylys work with his own accusations in which he claimed Bayly gave a false report favorable to the Catholic Church. This 1651 edition of Certament Religiosum features the Cartwright response, printed in 1652. Certamen religiosum, or, A conference between the late King of England and the late Lord Marquesse of Worcester concerning religion : together with a vindication of the Protestant cause from the pretences of the Marquesse his last papers which the necessity of the King's affaires denyed him oportunity to answer.
